This post contains a series of black-and-white photographs of flowers. You could consider them flower portraits. While flowers are often regarded as archetypal subjects for color photography, I still prefer to photograph them in black and white. Not only do I always photograph in black and white, but also because color is such an integral part of flowers. Photographing them in black and white is simply more challenging. Without the vibrant distraction of color, every detail of light, shadow, texture, and form becomes critical. One must pay careful attention to contrast and composition to ensure each image captures the flower’s essence and beauty in a completely different way.
Apart from these preliminary thoughts, the photographs are presented without further information except for the title and the location. No explanations, no talking. Just enough silence to allow for silent conversations between you and the image. What story does it tell you? Which emotions does it convey? Does it mean something to you? Why? Feel free to ask each photo and listen to its answers.
I encourage you to click on the photos for a larger view in an almost distraction-free lightbox. Prints are available on request.
