Did you know that there are Torii gates in Iceland too? While traditionally and historically a symbol strongly associated with Japan and Shinto shrines marking sacred spaces, it might come as a surprise that similar constructions have been created in Iceland by the local 21st century trolls. Whether this is an artistic homage, a cultural crossover, a playful nod to Japan’s famous spiritual architecture, or simply pure coincidence, spotting a “Torii gate” in the land of fire and ice adds an unexpected twist to the Icelandic landscape, even though their purpose may be slightly less spiritual or sacred. So next time you think Torii gates belong only in Kyoto or Miyajima, remember—there’s a little piece of Japan that might just be watching over Iceland’s majestic scenery with a wink.
